Ladies,
In these days of “iorestoacasa” (I am staying home) our Book Club ladies thought that those of you not in our book and reading clubs might like a few suggestions of books you can download onto your Kindle - if you don’t have a Kindle but have a smart phone or tablet it is sufficient to download the App to have access to Kindle e-books. If you don’t know how to do this please contact a member who can help you.
I would have liked to write you something amusing but after 4 weeks of being cooped up at home - !!! no doubt there are a few of you out there feeling much the same way. Never mind, we can pass the time reading & watching Netflix and Prime Video! Below is a list of books you can download & if you want some Netflix titles just let us know - as well as the thrillers and true stories there are comedies and romantic soapies.
Here are some books:
- The Silent Patient - now a film starring Vanessa Redgrave
- Born a Crime - true story by Trevor Noah - nowadays a well known comedian in the US
- American Dirt - a mother tells the story of how she and her son left Mexico for the US
- The Fifteen Lives of Harry August
- Where the Crawdads Sing - set in the Everglades of Florida
- The Unkillable Kitty O’Kane
- Educated - true story of Tara Westover who never went to school but got to college and is now a professor at Cambridge University in the UK
- A Gentleman in Moscow - a Russian aristocrat who lived in the Metropole Hotel for more than 20 years.
- When Breath becomes Air
- Olive Ketteridge by Elizabeth Strout - now also a TV series An easy read as it is also a series of short stories.
- Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman -also now on film
- Beneath a Scarlet Sky- true story (but with some fiction) of a young Milanese man during World War II. I found this book in Italian and recommended it to several Italian friends. All loved it. The author, Mark Sullivan, interviewed the man Pino Lella when he was in his early 80s, and who must now be in his early 90s, at his home in northern Lombardy - internet says north Milan but I think he might have lived in Lecco or the hinterland. Also this story has been made into a film/TV series.
-The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne, a very popular author with our members - you can google internet for other titles. His book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was made into a film
- For a touch of humour a book hard to beat is The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
Closer to home, all set in Italy, you might enjoy the Montalbano books by Camilleri. They are an easy read.
A website where you can download old classics for free is Project Gutenberg - I saw the Jack London stories there - your children might enjoy those and others - a cost free experience to get you started.
Make the most of this time of peace and quiet to sit back & enjoy your family and all this free time - and try not to succumb to unnecessary anxiety!
