“ Aroma Square”

A few weeks ago I participated in the Benvenuto zoom talk about aromatherapy. It was conducted by a charming young Russian lady, Elena Lebedeva.

I knew practically nothing about the subject - I have a few friends who have diffusers which emit pleasant smells and soft colored light.

After her talk I signed up for the 5 day introductory course Elena was offering.

On the Monday morning she dropped by with 4 small vials containing essential oils: peppermint, lavender, lemon and aroma touch.

It just happened too that at that time, a week earlier, I had started a new therapy and I was particularly anxious about its side effects.

This anxiety, combined with a difficult domestic situation, was causing my blood pressure to jump up & down despite the pills the doc had given me. Anyway the next day, a Tuesday morning Elena texted me - “sniff the peppermint for half a minute and drink 1 drop of lemon oil in a glass of tepid water”. During the day I was told to massage a drop of lavender on my temples. She added that if I was agitated I should sniff the peppermint to relax - and this became my daily routine, along with massaging 1 drop of Aroma Touch into the soles of my feet. So now I keep the vial of peppermint handy & use it to do a 5 min deep breathing meditation after applying one of the oils.

To be honest I don’t know if the oils helped - but I can assure you they did me no harm. And it must be remembered that the time was short.

During this time Elena sent me short encouraging texts and I felt very “cared for”. She calls this short “course” Aroma Square.

At the end of the week I was certainly more settled and decided to look into aromatherapy on the Internet.

It is a form of medicine that has been around for thousands of years. Many of the elements in these oils are used in modern drugs. Over time & the adoption of modern pharmaceutical products, essential oils lost ground because of the speed & ease with which pills, injections & drops can be introduced into the body - most of these medicines going in via the liver! However Aromatherapy takes a holistic approach and does not involve vital organs - it helps you listen to your body through meditation while inhaling beneficial oils with particular properties - it’s effects are not overnight, it takes time and you must persevere and be patient.

There are many different oils, each imparting it’s own beneficial properties - and delivered into your system by massage, inhalation, and by mouth in water. There are also many “carrier” oils that are used to dilute the essential oils that are very strong extracts needing dilution for certain applications - the diluting oils are oils from plants & nuts like jojo and coconut, not mineral oils.

Given the complexity of the subject, and to benefit from these expensive essential oils, I think guidance by an aromatherapist is a necessity - however if it is just to perfume a room then a diffuser (and there are many types though I believe an ionic one is the best) is enough.
